In reply to <a href="https://anilvanderzee.com/the-fear-in-my-doctors-eyes/#comment-465">Anil van der Zee</a>.

Oh, okay. Thank you for the clarification Anil. That's really sad about your friend. So many doctors just do things 'by the book', and never try to learn more. And even if they do give B12, they don't give it often enough, or for a long enough period of time for it to help in the repair process. Or they leave out folate/methylfolate.

It's up to us patients to learn as much as we can from others who are recovering -- and there are many! -- because the overwhelming majority of doctors are 'educated' by the pharmaceutical reps.

Take care Anil and don't give up hope. I know it's easy to do when one is SO depleted and in agony, but as someone who's had this illness for 22 years now, I've learned to (finally) see patterns, and although I had two remissions until 2005, and one remission of about 65% until 2011, when I ran out of money and was put on disability, I got a lot worse and was ready to give up several times. I was never completely bedridden, but got VERY close on three occasions.

I can look back now and see that I'm having the same symptoms I had waaaay back in 2002, so with the help of 2-3 people with donations (and not my family), I'm getting better again at age 63. B12 is part, but also other things. Just try to remember, even if it seems impossible -- your body is stronger than you think it is. You will get better.

Thank you for comment. I'm not against nutritional support. I use it myself as well. I also inject B12 myself but I think clinicians should investigate all aspects of the disease and try to treat it. His GP didn't. He *only* got B12 and she didn't help him any further.

Dear Anil, I have a sincere question for you, maybe two or three. Or four. :)

I noticed you kind of mocked that your friend was given B12 injections -- "Vitamins!!!" -- you said.

1. Do you think drugs will repair a broken. depleted, debilitated body?

2. Are you aware that Jodi Bassett -- the founder of The Hummingbirds' Foundation for ME -- did poorly for years and years, until she tried sublingual B12? She was doing 75% better, but unfortunately died a few years later from breast cancer.

3. Did you know that many vitamins and minerals have antimicrobial properties?

4. Did you know that 'night blindness/sensitivity to light' is one of the KEY symptoms of riboflavin deficiency?

I strongly encourage you to reconsider your negative view on nutritional supplementation when it comes to ME/CFS. I have the same illness as you, and although I'm not a dancer, I've had some of the same issues as you have both pre and post illness, and I can assure you, if you (of course) want to get well, nutrition and other things will be THE KEY. Not drugs.

I wonder if part of the reasons behind the medical establishments reactions to ME/CFS stem from the fact that we patients are a challenge to their egos and belief systems. If doctors think of themselves as authorities on how the human body works, they will be loath to acknowledge that there are illnesses out there that they do not understand. The thought that a patient might understand their own body better than the physician does is a challenge to a physicians ego. The hypothesis that ME/CFS is a phenomenon of deconditioning coupled with counterproductive patient beliefs / behaviors is tailor made to satisfy the psychological needs of medical authority figures. It is not a falsifiable theory - if a patient says they aren't getting better from CBT/GET, the physician can just explain that away by saying the patient didn't change their attitude enough to get better. It's also very convenient for government health / disability systems to adopt such a hypothesis.
